Master Study: Basic Shapes

This assignment involved taking old 16th / 19th century paintings and drawing the figures as basic shapes. I liked this exercise a lot.

  1. These are all really nice, there is a definite dimensionality to your figures and I like the light shading to emphasize that. The only thing I would ask for is a little more indication of the environment in which the figures exist.

  2. you picked some good paintings with great expressive scenes, and you carried out that emotion very well. I live the way you handled the poses as well as that tension and connection between the figures.

  3. These look fantastic! Very good line quality, especially in the first one, also good shading, very subtle, but it helps enhance the drawings.

  4. Bethany,
Good work, overall. The turning of the figures and poses in convincing. Use variety in line weight to emphasize the shadow side of a figure, as well as weight shift. The primitives you used are okay - I would recommend simplifying these slightly more, next time.
